Description

A row of four cottages was built in 1877, as indicated by the terracotta plaque bearing the initials “H de R”. They are constructed of red brick with decorative dentil eaves and old tile roofs. The cottages display a symmetrical design across six bays. Bays two and five project forward with gabled fronts, each featuring a three-light wooden casement window within a segmental head. The central bays also feature casement windows; two-light to the ground floor and three-light in gabled semi-dormers. Doors are located in the angles of the projecting bays, each sheltered by a hipped porch with turned wooden balusters and trelliswork, with a small window above. The outer bays are lower and set back. The left bay incorporates a 20th-century lean-to projection with a door within a verandah featuring matching balusters. The right bay has a small arrow slit window and a hipped porch with two bays of balusters. The cottages were originally built as picturesque estate housing by Hannah de Rothschild. They are included on the list for their group value. The chimneys are brick and symmetrical, with rectangular stacks grooved to resemble a group of square shafts with offset heads.
