Description

Two cottages, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, were altered and bear a terracotta plaque dated 1876, commemorating Hannah de Rothschild’s improvements. They are constructed of red and vitreous chequer brick, with moulded brick eaves, an old tile roof, moulded bargeboards, and flanking brick chimneys featuring “V” pilasters and off-set heads. The cottages are two storeys and have an attic, with two bays. Each bay has a two-storey gabled bay window, half-timbered with pebbledash infill to the front, tile-hanging and herringbone brick infill to the sides, and jettied upper floors supported on moulded brackets. The windows are barred wooden casements with thick glazing bars; a small two-light casement is centrally placed on the first floor. A lean-to roof extends between the bay windows at first floor level, covering a half-glazed front door with matching glazing bars. A similar door, within an architrave frame and with a tiled lean-to hood, is located on the left gable. Attic casements are set into the gables. The rear elevation features a gabled projection replicating the style of the front bay windows, but with a canted oriel window on a coved base to the first floor. These cottages were enhanced by Hannah de Rothschild as part of a picturesque group of estate cottages.
