Description

Three houses, originally a lodge, laundry, and accommodation for laundry maids at Mentmore Towers, were likely built around 1870-80, possibly by George Devey. The buildings are constructed of red brick with a moulded plinth and moulded dentil cornice. The upper floors of the building to the left are rendered with decorative half-timbering, tile hanging, and bargeboards to the gables. They have tiled roofs and brick chimneys, with those on the lodge having moulded brick entablature tops.

The overall design is an irregular and picturesque grouping, with a residential block to the left forming one side of a central yard. This is accompanied by an L-shaped laundry and a projecting lodge to the right. The structures are 1½ storeys high. Windows are irregular wooden casements with thick glazing bars. The lodge has a pedimented gable to the south, featuring a three-light casement window on the first floor and a semi-octagonal window with an ogee lead roof below. A recessed porch to the right has a hipped roof supported by turned wooden balusters. A central gabled bay on the right side incorporates a stone plaque displaying Rothschild cyphers.

The laundry has half-hipped roofs, dormers with louvred vents, and segmental relieving arches over the windows. A modern lean-to with a door and casement window is located in front of the far wing. The block to the left has two gables; the left gable has a jettied first floor, an upper oriel window on a coved base, and a canted bay window to the ground floor. The right gable features a lower six-light window, a five-light window above, and a double louver to the attic. A single-story bay to the far left has a five-sided bay window in the corner, with a hipped roof extending to the right on turned wooden balusters to form a verandah that shelters a half-glazed door.
