Description
Borlase School, a grammar school founded by Henry Borlase in 1624, is located on the northwest side of West Street. The central and original part of the building is two storeys high with an attic, constructed from flint with brick quoins and window surrounds, topped with an old tile roof. It features a central chimney with diamond and square shafts and an elaborate offset head. The central gable projection, which was the former entry, now has one window on each floor. On either side of this projection are gabled dormers, and below are eight-light mullioned and transomed casements, with a stone panel inscribed with text between them. All the window lights are of early 19th-century design. There are flanking additions of different dates, primarily from 1954, which are built in matching materials of flint and brick. Borlase School and No 104 form a group.
