Description

Remnantz is a house dating from 1799 to 1811, with alterations. It is two storeys and an attic, constructed of brown brick with red dressings. A moulded brick string runs at first-floor level and over the first-floor windows. The house features a brick dentilled moulded cornice and a parapet with stone coping, topped with a slate roof and three dormers.

The road front has flanking half-octagon, two-storey bays with two windows on the first floor between them, and are divided by a central brick pilaster. Between the bays is a nine-panel central door, flanked by narrow windows with balustrade aprons, all set within an elaborate Ionic surround: pilasters, entablature with a curved frieze and modillioned cornice, and a projected porch supported by two Ionic columns. The porch is accessed by five moulded stone steps with curved, plain contemporary guardrails and urn standards. A long, plain wing extends at right angles to the main house on the left side of the rear elevation, partly dating to the early 19th century. The south front features a central Palladian window at mezzanine level, with a garden door beneath, flanked by a single window, also from the early 19th century. There is a two-storey angular bay added to the left-hand side.

Originally a three-storey, U-shaped house, the top storey and part of one wing were removed in the early 19th century, shortly after the Royal Military College (later Sandhurst) occupied the house and possibly Marlow Place, from 1799 to 1811. The interior retains a good early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, along with contemporary panelling and carved door frames.
