Description

Monks Staithe is a house dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, with a wing added to the rear in the 17th to early 18th century. The building features a heavy timber frame with brick infill, some of which is made with thin brick, and has an old tile roof. An external chimney stack on the right is constructed of thin brick and flint, with ashlar quoins and coping, and has a rebuilt octagonal stone shaft along with a small lean-to at the front. There is a small 20th-century brick chimney on the left side. The house is two storeys high and has two bays. The windows are 20th-century leaded casements, with a two-light window on the ground floor of the left bay and three-light windows on both storeys of the right bay. To the right of the left bay, there is a door with a 20th-century timber porch. There are also 20th-century single-storey extensions to the left, one of which has a balcony. The rear wing has a lighter timber frame with brick infill and lean-to extensions at the angle. Inside, there are heavy floor joists, a chamfered cross beam supported by small curved braces, and a chamfered upper truss with a tie-beam on similar braces, along with curved queen struts, collar, and clasped purlins. The building also features curved wind-braces and a 16th-century fireplace made of thin brick with a chamfered depressed arch. There is a winder staircase with some 16th to 17th-century shaped splat balusters. Notably, Amy Johnson lived here.
