Description
The Library, formerly a row of cottages and listed as the Fire Services Office, is a building dating from the 15th to early 16th century. It underwent alterations in the 16th to early 17th century and the 19th century, with restoration in 1938. The structure features a timber frame with whitewashed render infill. The ground floor front was rebuilt in brick in the early 19th century, and the left gable was rebuilt in brick in the 20th century, topped with a crow-stepped design. The building has a tiled roof and is 1½ storeys high, with the upper storey jettied to the front on beam ends. It consists of four bays and has irregular barred wooden windows, including a 3-light horizontal sliding sash on the ground floor left, a 4-light casement in the second bay, a canted bay window in the third bay, and a long eaves-line dormer with a row of six small casements in the second bay. There is a boarded door to the left and 20th-century double doors recessed in the right bay.
Inside, the space is open to the roof and features a narrow gallery along the south jettied side. The central bays were originally an open hall, with the central truss displaying chamfered arched braces to the collar. The flanking tie beam trusses on the south side have curved braces, while the north side braces were replaced in the 20th century. The roof includes curved wind-braces. A 17th-century wing at the rear has a timber frame with brick infill in the gable, and its side walls have been rebuilt in brick.
