Description
Walnut Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, substantially altered in the 19th century as part of the Rothschild estate. It is timber-framed, with the exterior largely colourwashed brick, and the upper part rendered and painted. The roof is tiled, with half-hipped ends, a chimney to the right of the centre with bands, and a wide eaves gable to the left, tile-hung with a 6-light casement window. A projecting porch with a swept roof is located to the right of the centre, and there is an eaves dormer to the right with a swept roof and a 2-light casement window.
The house has one-and-a-half storeys and a three-bay lobby entry plan. Diamond-leaded casement windows are fitted with 20th-century board shutters pierced with heart-shaped openings. The porch has 20th-century glazed double doors, and side windows have 19th-century coloured glass, along with 4- and 2-light casements to the left and a single 3-light casement to the right. The left-hand gable features a large projecting stack and a one-storey wing with a half-hipped roof. The right-hand gable has a 19th-century painted imitation timber framing pattern to the upper part, originally applied to the front elevation. A square bay window with a tiled hipped roof, 4 lights wide and 1 light deep, is prominent, with a 3-light upper casement window and a tile-hung gable. The rear elevation includes a projecting dairy with a swept roof to the left of the centre.
