Description

The Clock Tower with attached wall and drinking fountain, built in 1843 with alterations and a turret added in 1870, is located on the south side of Wendover High Street. The clock tower has a square plan and three stages. The ground floor features chequered brickwork with a Gothic arched doorway on the west side, a window on the north side, and similar arched blank niches with stone roundels on the other sides. It has a tiled pyramid roof with dentil brick eaves and small triangular dormers on the south and east sides, leading up to the clock turret. The turret is made of red brick and has arched recesses that hold the clock faces, along with paired ventilator slits below. Stone plaques on the tower commemorate the Parish Council's ownership of the clock since 1842, the erection of the tower by Abel Smith Esq., Lord of the Manor in 1842, and the rebuilding in 1870. There is a chamfered string at the clock face level, and above the tiled pyramid roof with dentil eaves, there is a wooden bell turret topped with a tiled spirelet and finial. Attached to the south side is a low red brick wall with stone dressings, which includes a drinking fountain with a stone bowl set in a Gothic arched recess. Originally, the building was designed to house the parish fire engine, and the interior was adapted for use as a Tourist Office in 1985.
