Description

The Old Town House is a late 19th-century red brick building with blue brick decoration and stone dressings, originally built as a dentists’ surgery and formerly Wendover Literary Institute, opened in 1863. It may have been designed by William Wilkinson of Oxford. The building has a steep-pitched tiled roof with decorative bands of fishscale tiles, a brick chimney, and dentil brick eaves.

The High Street elevation features a projecting gable to the right, with a three-light gothic arched window on the first floor, characterised by colonnettes and moulded capitals. Below are two segmental arched sash windows. A central gabled porch contains a gothic arched doorway and displays an inscription and date on the apex stone. To the left is a two-light gothic window, and the right-hand light has a sloping cill. The Aylesbury Road elevation includes a full-height canted bay to the right with gothic arched windows at the upper level and segmental windows below. The building occupies a prominent location in the village centre.
