Description
The Monument to Captain Cook, dating from around 1780, is located approximately 70 metres north of The Vache in Chalfont St Giles. This structure features a circular miniature moat surrounding a mound, on which stands an open two-storey tower made of flint rubble with red brick dressings. The tower has an open arcade with one round-headed arch on each side and is topped with a battlemented parapet. Inside, there is a square stone pedestal that is inscribed with an extensive eulogium of Captain Cook and supports a globe. A staircase leads to the flat roof. The monument was erected by Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, a friend of Cook, who was a frequent guest at The Vache.
