Description
Shrub's Wood is a substantial house constructed between 1933 and 1934, designed by Mendelsohn and Chermayeff. It is characterized by its monolithic reinforced concrete construction and exemplifies the International Modern architectural idiom. The two-story house comprises two main sections, with the portion to the left set forward and connected to the right-hand section by a quadrant curve containing the staircase. The recessed entrance to the left portion is accessed through a square-headed opening featuring an original glazed door with metal glazing bars. To the left of the entrance, ribbon windows with seven lights are present on each floor, incorporating concrete mullions and metal casements. A four-light picture window is positioned on the upper floor of the quadrant curve. The ground floor on the right side of the house is largely blank, while the upper floor features a ten-light ribbon window with concrete mullions and metal casements topped by a coped parapet. The side and rear elevations exhibit a similar design and are also architecturally significant. The interior retains all original fitted furniture, panelling, and other fitments. The house was featured in The Architectural Review in November 1935 and is documented in Modern Houses in England by FRS Yorke, and Modern Houses in Britain, 1919-1939 by J. Gould.
