Description

Nos. 35 and 37 on High Street are a house that has been subdivided, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The structure is timber-framed with brick infill, and the rear or north elevation has plastered infill. The ground floor features part colourwashed roughcast on a rubble plinth. The eastern section is constructed of witchert, which is also colourwashed and roughcast, and the building is two storeys high with two bays of timber framing gable end facing the road and two bays of witchert. The roof is slightly higher on the witchert section, which houses a large 17th-century brick stack with inglenooks for each house and stairs to No. 35 inside. The street gable elevation jetties out and has a 2-light casement window supported by curved braces. There are irregular casements on the south side and a pantiled pentice with a door at the east. There is a stack located between the right and left hand bays, along with a central 17th-century stack. The witchert bays include a small staircase window on the left and two bays of modern casements, with an 18th-century brick gable above a brick band on the east side. The north entrance leads to a lean-to for No. 37. Inside No. 35, there is a chamfered fireplace lintel in the inglenook, above which are three early 17th-century plaster plaques: the centre plaque features arabesque foliage, while the outer plaques depict heads in roundels, including one of a soldier. The interior also has chamfered and stopped spine beams.
