Description

The Baptist Church, dated 1809, is located in Stockwell, Haddenham. The building is constructed of witchert, colourwashed and roughcast or rendered, with a colourwashed rubblestone plinth, and has a slate roof. It is a square building of three bays, with a two-storey exterior due to galleries on three sides. The north elevation features two round-headed windows with margined frames and opening radial fanlights. The east front, facing the road, has two storeys of cambered headed sashes. The south, or entrance, front has two six-panel doors enclosed within a hipped slate-roofed verandah with posts and cast-iron spandrel decoration, spanning three bays. The upper floor of the south front contains three round-headed windows, with margin lights and radiating fanlights, the centre window being smaller. The interior features a south gallery which is original, with a panelled front incorporating applied pointed arched ornament. Side galleries were added around 1812, with panelled fronts, but are lower than the south gallery. Contemporary gallery seating is present throughout. An inscription over the east doorway on the south wall reads 'Built Nov. 1st 1809 P.T.'.
