Description
A pair of estate cottages dating from circa 1898-1900, designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield. The ground floor is constructed of dressed chalk blocks, while the upper storey is roughcast and whitewashed, topped with a plain tile roof. The gables feature wooden bargeboards, and there are brick chimneys with 'V' pilasters and off-set heads to the ends and centre. The cottages are designed in a picturesque style. They are 1½ storeys high, with the upper storey jettied to the south and east, supported by a wooden bressumer resting on curved wooden brackets. There are four bays, with the western bay gabled. The ground floor has three pairs of two-light stone mullion windows, and board doors set within four-centred arches flanking the central window. The upper storey features a five-light canted wooden oriel in the gabled bay, and three two-light gabled dormers. The windows are fitted with leaded glazing. A wooden bressumer is positioned above the oriel. The rear elevation has a lower eaves line, catslide projections on both sides, similar stone mullion windows and board doors in stop-chamfered surrounds. Dormers are present, including a four-light dormer with an 'M' gable to the centre and right, a raking six-light dormer to the left, and a two-light casement within the right gable.
