Description
This building, originally a barn and now a menagerie, is located approximately 60 meters northwest of Fawley Court. It dates from around 1770 and was altered later. The structure was designed by Sambrook Freeman and features chequer brick, with the southern end whitewashed and the rest showing traces of colourwash. It has flat eaves and a hipped slate roof, forming a long single-storey building with an apse at the northern end.
The sides of the building display a shallow blind arcade of semi-circular arches that continues around the apse, with a band course at the impost level. Some of the arches contain arched windows with glazing bars, while others have large double wooden doors. The southern end features three arches: the left arch has an arched window, the center arch contains a thermal window, and between the arches are recessed rectangular panels with roundels above. There are also square ventilation holes below the eaves. Attached to the building are 20th-century sheds. The structure includes unusual shallow trusses designed to cover a wide span using short timbers. An original drawing indicates that only thermal windows were present initially.
