Description
The River Gate in Fawley Court Grounds is a small covered bridge with a gateway, designed as a garden feature. It was built in the mid-18th century by John Freeman of Fawley Court. The structure is made of flint and stucco, with some stone dressings, and is designed in the Mannerist style. The west front features a central rectangular entry topped with a pediment, flanked by screen walls made of flint that have a band course below a stone-coped parapet. There are four Tuscan stone pilasters with rusticated bands of flint. The side walls include central windows with rusticated flint surrounds. The rear of the bridge has an arched entry, flanked by flint pilasters with moulded stone caps and a pediment. This bridge is located on a path leading to the bank of the Thames and crosses a small stream.
