Description
This is a former school and school-master's house, now a private residence, dating to 1876 as indicated by a plaque on the chimney. It was a gift from R. Hon. J.G. Hubbard M.P., later Lord Addington. The building is constructed of red brick with decorative bands of blue brick and stone dressings, and has a tiled roof adorned with ornamental panelled bargeboards. It is built in a picturesque Jacobean style. The school room, on the right side, features two gabled bays with stone mullioned windows of three lights, small square lights above, and small stone roundels at the gable apex. An elaborate external chimney stack between the bays includes a decorative date plaque and an octagonal stone shaft. To the left of the school room is an open timber porch with a hipped roof, an ogee arch with ornamented spandrels on the front, and balusters with decorative cusping to the sides. A half-timbered porch with herringbone brick infill and a pointed arched door is located at the right gable, topped by a bellcote with a shingled spirelet. The school-master’s house, located in a cross wing to the left, has a hipped roof and tall Jacobean chimney shafts. The front gable features a three-light sash window with stone mullions on the first floor, and a square bay window below with matching lights and a hipped roof.
