Description
Cross Farmhouse is a house dated 1723, featuring a carved stone plaque with the Dormer family coat-of-arms. The building is constructed of chequer brick with vitreous headers, red brick quoins and window surrounds, and includes a moulded plinth, first floor band course, and eaves. It has an old tile roof with brick coped gables and a partly rebuilt brick chimney situated between the right bays. The house has a double pile plan, with a narrow rear range that includes three hipped roof spurs at right angles to the front range. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and consists of five bays. The windows are three-pane sash types set in flush wooden frames, and there are three 20th-century hipped dormers with paired leaded casements. A blocked cellar window is located to the right. The centre bay features a blind window panel above a nine-panelled door in a wooden frame, and all main floor openings have segmental heads. The sides of the house have similar sashes or blind windows, with the left gable featuring an oval window in the attic and Regency ironwork that was brought from Aylesbury. There are small 20th-century brick extensions with an entry and garages at the northwest corner. It is said that the house was built by Robert Dormer, Justice of the Peace, for one of his daughters.
