Description
Wormsley House is a large house that underwent remodelling around 1800, originally built in the mid-18th century. It features colourwashed render, slate roofs, and brick chimneys, arranged in a U-plan. The building has three storeys and six bays, with a plinth, a moulded cornice at the second floor level, and a stone-coped parapet. The outer bays are slightly advanced and have shallow arched recesses at the ground floor. The windows are three-pane sash types, with half-size versions in the attic storey.
To the right of the centre, there are double flush-panelled doors with an ornamental rectangular fanlight, flanked by tall narrow lights and a glazed Doric porch. Each end of the range features a canted bay with similar sash windows. The right side of the house is symmetrical, with canted bays flanking four two-storey bays. The left side has a wing made of whitewashed brick and flint with an old tile roof. The rear also features whitewashed brick and flint with irregular window placements.
Inside, the front range and right wing contain good marble fireplaces from around 1800, adorned with inlaid coloured marble ornament, moulded cornices, and carved frieze panels. There are contemporary plaster ceiling cornices with pierced ornament, including an ornamental plaster ceiling in the front right room and a central plaster vaulted passage in the right wing. The hall features a screen of Ionic columns to the left and a fireplace flanked by segmental arched openings. The right arch leads to a re-sited mid-18th century staircase, which has elegant turned balusters, carved scroll tread ends, and a wreathed moulded handrail. The left wing includes a ground floor room with a mid-18th century ceiling cornice and a moulded architrave surrounding the fireplace, as well as another mid-18th century fireplace on the first floor of the right wing.
