Description

Two houses, nos. 78 and 80, were refronted around 1820, but incorporate an earlier 18th-century building. The front is built of Flemish bond brick, with a gabled roof covered in plain tiles to the front and concrete tiles to the rear. A brick ridge stack is present, along with a lateral stack at the rear. The houses are arranged with a two-unit plan, and are two storeys high with a four-window front. Each house has a six-panel bolection-moulded door recessed within an outer doorcase, which includes pilasters and console brackets supporting a flat hood with reeded cornices. Decorative fanlights are above the doors. Canted bay windows have moulded wood cornices and glazing-bar sashes. Gauged brick flat arches are above the 12-pane first-floor sashes. The rear of the houses retains 18th-century brick ranges. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. A Flemish bond brick wall, built in the early 19th century, encloses the garden to the rear.

A second description indicates a late 18th-century date, with symmetrical design, two storeys, brick construction, flat eaves and a slate roof. Each house has two windows to the first floor, an angular bay window to the left on the ground floor, and a six-panel door set within a plain reveal. The doorcase is formed of narrow Doric pilasters and console brackets with scroll brackets supporting a thin flat moulded hood. A rectangular fanlight with radiating and curved glazing is above the door. The houses contribute to a group with nos. 72 and 74.
