Description

House, built around 1730 and significantly altered around 1820. It is now offices. The building is brick, with a stuccoed front dating to the early 19th century, and has gabled plain tile roofs and brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands three stories high, originally with a two-window front.

The front features two three-story bow windows, each with projecting reeded cornices over early 19th century tripartite sash windows. To the right is a similar cornice set over Tuscan columns, supporting a 20th-century door with strip lights set within a reeded architrave with roundels. A deep cornice runs along the roofline. The rear and left side walls feature early 19th century 12-pane sashes. Number 72 is connected to Number 74 by a wooden bridge with octagonal glazing bars to its first-floor windows.

Inside, the left-hand ground-floor room has early 19th century reeded cornices and architraves, while the room to the right features a moulded cornice, early 19th century panelling, and segmental-arched doorways leading to service areas. At the rear are two identical early 18th century dog-leg staircases with bindings, panelled dados, and moulded handrails on turned balusters. The house has both 18th century fielded panel doors and early 19th century panelled doors. Reeded cornices and architraves with roundels are found in first-floor rooms.

Number 72 was originally built as two dwellings before being converted into a single house in the early 19th century, retaining its two 18th-century staircases. A projecting plinth and wide flat eaves on a reeded bed mould are prominent features. The building is part of a group with numbers 78 and 80.
