Description
Nos 41 and 41A on High Street are 18th-century buildings that consist of one house with three storeys, an attic, and a cellar. The structure is made of vitreous brick and features a moulded plinth, red quoins, and window surrounds. It has a moulded and modillioned wood cornice and a pediment. The hipped roof is covered with old tiles and extends out to the eaves, with two cabled dormers. The front of the building has five bays, with the three central bays slightly projecting and topped with a pediment. All ground and first-floor windows have stone cills and fretted sunblind pelmets, and the glazing bars are intact.
The entrance features a five-panel central radiating fanlight and panelled reveals, framed by pilasters with a cap mould that extends over the doorhead. The architraves are adorned with a bearded and crowned head keystone, and the doorcase is supported by two Ionic engaged fluted columns and an entablature with a curved frieze and bracketed cornice. There are two moulded stone steps leading up to the entrance, accompanied by contemporary area rails on the right side, which have turn-topped standards and twist beads on the bars.
Nos 41 to 40 (odd) and the Chequers Hotel form a group.
