Description
Nos. 12-18 Aylesbury Road are four almshouses founded in 1569 by Dame Dorothy Pelham, the wife of Sir William Dormer, as noted on a former inscription tablet. The buildings were altered in the 19th century and refurbished in 1982. They are constructed of coursed rubble stone with chamfered brick surrounds to the openings. The roof is made of old tiles, featuring brick coped gables with shaped stone kneelers, and there are rebuilt flanking and central brick chimneys, each with two square shafts linked at the top. The dormers are rendered and have similar coped gables and kneelers. The structure is one storey with an attic and consists of four bays. The 20th-century leaded casements have depressed heads, with three-light windows on the ground floor and two-light windows in the attic dormers. There are pairs of board doors between bays 1 and 2 and between bays 3 and 4, each door featuring a four-centred chamfered brick arch. A 1982 inscription tablet is located at the center in a moulded stone frame. There are also small lean-to extensions at the rear.
