Description
Coombe Farmhouse is a house that dates from the late 16th century, with significant rebuilding in the 19th century and again in the late 1970s. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings and has old tile roofs, featuring a rebuilt central brick chimney. The building is arranged in a U-shape, with two central bays that have one storey and an attic, while the flanking gabled cross wings are two storeys high. The outer bays and the right of the centre have 20th-century three-light barred wooden casements. An attic window in the third bay is set in a gabled eaves-line dormer, and the other windows have segmental heads. To the left of centre, there is a wide flush-panelled top-lit door, which originally led to a cross passage. There is another gabled bay to the left that was formerly a dairy, and flint and brick extensions project to the right, which were once farm buildings. The rear of the house was completely rebuilt after a fire in the mid-1970s. Inside, some timber framing remains in the cross wings; the right cross wing features a two-bay upper chamber with curved braces to the tie beam, a queen strut truss, and ogee wind-braces in the front bay, while the rear bay has been renewed. The central bays were likely once a hall, but the central truss has been altered.
