Description
Blacksmith's Cottage is a house that was formerly several cottages. The lower range on the right is of medieval origin, while the taller left range dates from the late 17th century. Both sections have been extensively reconstructed in the 19th century and refurbished around 1980. The building is constructed of flint with brick dressings, and some timber framing with narrow brick infill is present on the first floor at the rear of the taller block. It has a tiled roof with a central brick chimney that has been heightened, featuring an original off-set head now below the ridge. The cottage is two storeys high and has six bays. The three left bays have dentil brick eaves, while the remainder has off-set eaves. There are 20th-century two and three-light leaded casements, with those on the first floor slightly breaking through the eaves. A 20th-century gabled porch is located to the left of the centre. Inside, there is a central cruck truss with blades that terminate above the collar, and another cruck blade is found at the rear between the right bays. Between the cruck trusses, there is a timber-framed cross wall, possibly a spere truss, featuring a curved brace and a tie beam notched to carry the purlin. Some timber framing is also visible in the left bays.
