Description

Old Bartons and The Randolph's Upsteps are two houses and a flat, dating from the 16th to early 17th century. They were refronted in the 19th century and have been altered and extended in the 20th century. The buildings feature some timber framing with brick infill, which is partly whitewashed, and this framing is exposed in the right gable and rear wing. The front has been rebuilt in brick, with the right bay being whitewashed. The eaves are decorated with dentils, and the roof is tiled, with the left bay hipped and covered in old tiles. A 16th to 17th century brick chimney with a 'V' pilaster is located at the rear of the right bay, while a rebuilt brick chimney is found to the left. The structure is L-shaped, with a circa 1950 extension at the angle to the rear of the right bay, along with other smaller 20th century extensions to the rear and left. The building has two storeys and two original bays at the front. The ground floor features 20th century rectangular bay windows with leaded lights and half-timbered gables, with the right window flanked by single lights. The first floor has a 20th century aluminium window with a top-light on the right. There is a 20th century brick extension to the left, which includes leaded glazing in the first floor bay window. There are entries in the extensions to the rear wing, and the right gable has 20th century steps leading up to a first floor entry. Another entry is found in the circa 1950 whitewashed brick wing with a gable. Inside, there is some timber framing with curved braces in the first floor walls, heavy floor timbers, and the right bay contains a moulded spine beam. The ground floor left room features a stone fireplace with a moulded four-centred arch and carved spandrels.
