Description

House. Built in 1857 for the astronomer William Rutter Dawes. The house is constructed of witchert, which has been rendered in Roman cement. It has a hipped slate roof with paired eaves brackets. The centrally positioned entry is recessed with a depressed arch and pilasters. The doorway features a depressed arched radiating fanlight. Moulded, cement-surrounded sash windows are lugged to the ground floor. A two-bay, two-storey wing is set back on the right hand side, also featuring sashes. The rendered exterior has been scribed to imitate masonry blocks. A flat roof in the centre of the house was used for meteorological observations. William Rutter Dawes (1799-1868), an amateur astronomer, built the house. Elected a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1830 and awarded its Gold Medal in 1855, he was noted for his work on double stars.
