Description
Ludgershall Farmhouse is a house dating to the late 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. An 18th-century cross wing was added to the north, also altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of coursed rubble stone, partly rebuilt, with some exposed timber framing to the first floor and rear of the southern wing. The rear of the southern wing contains thin brick infill. It has an asbestos slate roof and rebuilt brick chimneys to the gables. The building has an L-shaped plan with a small lean-to in the angle.
The original part of the house has one large bay, while the 18th-century wing has two bays. The front windows are 20th-century metal casements. The left side of the cross wing has two 18th-century four-light leaded casements on the first floor. The rear of the older wing features five-light casements with old frames and 20th-century leaded glazing, and a wide door within a wooden frame with a small roll moulding, covered by a tiled hood over a ground floor window and the door. The main entrance is now located in a 19th-century lean-to at the end of the cross wing.
Inside the original wing, features include a chamfered spine beam, a large open fireplace, and a 16th-17th century winder staircase to the first floor and attic. The lower part of the staircase has a moulded handrail and a turned baluster at the landing. The 18th-century wing contains narrower stop-chamfered spine beams and a timber-framed partition wall.
