Description
This is a threshing barn with a hay loft and shippon located 30 meters northeast of Swarth Gill House. It dates from the early 18th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century. The barn is constructed from roughly coursed sandstone rubble, with the later section featuring more regularly coursed and watershot stone, and it has through-stones. The roofs are made of stone slate. The barn is oriented east-west, facing south, with the later section added to the west end and lean-to additions at the rear.
The main range includes a large wagon doorway in the second bay, which has a weathered lintel, and a smaller wagon doorway in the rear wall that is now blocked. There is also a doorway to the left and two slit breathers above it. The left side of the addition has similar slit breathers, while the gable wall features a doorway with a large semicircular lintel, possibly from a former millstone. The later additions at the rear have lean-to and catslide roofs.
Inside, the older section has a trenched purlin roof, while the later section has a queen-strut roof. This barn forms a group with Swarth Gill House.
