Description

Hind Keld West is a small farmhouse with an attached store and outbuilding, now used as a dwelling. It was likely built in the early 18th century, with the outbuilding added probably in the 19th century, and has undergone alterations since. The farmhouse is constructed from random rubble with through-stones and quoins, and has a graduated stone slate roof. It is situated on a small slope, built with its back to the lane and close to a beck.

The building has an L-shaped plan, comprising a single-depth, two-unit main range with a rear outshut to the left, a store at the right-hand end, and an outbuilding added to the left end. The front of the main range has a central doorway with a 20th-century board door, protected by a stone porch with a mono-pitched roof and an inner side bench. It is flanked by small rectangular windows on each floor, with a narrow fire-window on each floor to the left of those, and a corbelled chimney at the left gable. The store, extending to the right, has a doorway at ground floor level and a window above. The outbuilding, situated down the slope to the left, is single-storeyed, featuring a doorway close to its junction with the main range and a small rear extension that formerly contained a privy over a pigsty. The rear of the farmhouse has a small outshut under a catslide roof and various small windows.

The interior is now one large space on the ground floor, after a 20th-century wooden partition was removed. It contains five lateral beams, including one at the west end which was likely a smokehood bressumer. This beam has exposed joists, with some between the first and second beams exhibiting a stopped small chamfer, and many resting on packing pieces rather than being tenoned into the supporting beams. A large rectangular fireplace is present at the west end, featuring stone jambs and a timber lintel, with a recess for a former spice cupboard to the left and another recess at ground level to the right. A smaller rectangular stone fireplace with a corbelled lintel is located at the east end. Other features include a dairy with stone shelves, stone stairs, and two principal rafter roof trusses; the truss to the west has a severed tie-beam. The building represents a good example of a plan-form typical of the late 17th and early 18th centuries within this dale and forms a group with Hind Keld East, situated approximately 75 metres to the east.
