Description
Smithy Chapel, also known as Garsdale Methodist Chapel, is located to the south-east of Blades on Hawes Road. The chapel is dated 1830 on the south gable, although it may be older since this gable is an extension. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins, while the west side is rendered, and it features a stone slate roof.
The chapel has a simple rectangular plan oriented on a north-south axis, with the gable facing the road and a short extension at this end. This extension is two low storeys high and has a gabled facade that includes a tall round-headed doorway in the center, made of rubble voussoirs and fitted with 20th-century double doors. Above the doorway is a square plaque inscribed with "GARSDALE / METHODIST / CHAPEL / 1830," which is likely re-cut. To the left of the doorway is a small square window at ground level, and a two-flue gable chimney is also present.
On the east side, the main range features a large 25-pane window, with the top two tiers appearing to be a tilting casement opening. There is a quoined vertical junction to the left of this window, and the extension has a four-pane sash window at ground level and a 12-pane fixed window above. On the west side, the main range has a 16-pane sash window, while the extension includes a 12-pane sash window on each floor.
Inside, the chapel has simple benches and a dais at the north end with a pulpit.
