Description
Gate Cottage and Hobbs Gate are a pair of cottages, originally a row of four, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The construction is of rubble stone with stone dressings, and the roof is slate. The left-hand side has a 20th-century entrance leading to Gate Cottage. To the right of centre is an early 19th-century entrance for Hobbs Gate, featuring a plain surround and a 20th-century six-panel door. There are remains of two blocked entrances, one with a segmental pointed lintel. The ground floor has four windows: one is 20th-century, one is from the early 19th century with a plain surround, one is 20th-century in a former entrance, and the right-hand one is also from the early 19th century with a plain surround. The windows are a mixture of 20th-century casements and sashes. The upper floor has five windows: the left-hand one is 20th-century, while the remaining four were originally 2-light windows from the 17th century, now with missing mullions and sashes with glazing bars. There are three ridge stacks and a gable end ridge stack which projects and is supported on two stone corbels, flanked by small 17th-century chamfered windows on either side.
