Description
The rockery adjacent to Reeth Cottage was built between 1906 and 1914 by Messrs. Backhouse of York for Mr. F S Graham. It features limestone blocks arranged in picturesque mounds with narrow paths between them, all enclosed by a wall made of rubblestone topped with cast-iron railings. The enclosure measures approximately 14 by 42 metres and includes quoins and flat coping on the return walls that slope up the hill. The low front wall has triangular-sectioned coping and is interrupted by a gate with round-topped monolithic gate piers, topped with hooped railings that have bud finials. The rockery's stones are said to have been sourced from a nearby field to the west of the village. The builders, James Backhouse and Son, were known for their expertise in creating rockeries and alpine nurseries since the late 1850s. The rockery also contains a large and diverse collection of alpine plants, although this aspect is not included in the listing.
