Description
The Big Laithe, located approximately 300 metres south-east of Nappa Hall, is a building for cows and hay dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and features two storeys in an irregular H-plan layout.
On the south elevation, there are central board barn doors beneath a timber lintel, with small lights arranged in a 2:1 pattern in the side bays on the ground floor. The first floor has a central window that is now blocked, featuring a cambered lintel made of rubble voussoirs. The side bays include pitching doorways, and the building has shaped kneelers, although most of the original coping is missing.
The rear elevation displays central board barn doors under a segmental arch of rubble voussoirs, along with eight vents. On the left return, there are two board stable doors under segmental arches of rubble voussoirs, with a window situated in between. This building was designed to accommodate 40 cattle, which is significantly more than what is typically housed in Dales field barns.
