Description

Carlow Hill, also known as Carlow Hall Cottage, is a small farmhouse located in Dentdale. It likely dates from the earlier part of the 18th century and was enlarged in the 19th century with some alterations. The building features white-painted random rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof. Originally a single-depth plan, it has been expanded by the addition of a second unit at the south end, with a shippon or barn attached at the north end, built into the rising slope.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, featuring vertical joints on either side of the central bay. To the left of the first joint is a square-headed doorway, which is sheltered by a small early 20th-century gabled wooden porch. There is an 8-pane sash window on each floor to the left, with vertical glazing bars only, a small 2-light casement window at ground floor level to the right, and a small square 6-pane sash window above. The attached peat-house on the right slightly projects forward and has a 12-pane fixed window at the first-floor level, which includes one opening pane. A ridge chimney is located at the junction of the first and second bays, with a gable chimney to the left. There is also a small lean-to outbuilding attached to the right-hand gable wall of the peat-house. At the rear, there is a full-height outshut at the south end and a lean-to in the angle with this.

Inside, there is a doorway in the thick stone partition wall between the first and second bays, which was formerly the south gable wall. This doorway features the original board door with strap hinges. The centre bay has a chamfered axial beam with exposed joists, while the rest of the interior has been altered.
