Description

This is an early 19th century shooting lodge, now operating as a youth hostel. It was built by John Elam and used by the Bentinck family as a shooting lodge, and has been altered since. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with some areas rendered and all surfaces painted white. It has a graduated slate roof with crested ridges. The irregular plan comprises a single-depth main range running roughly east-west, a projecting cross-wing at the east end, and a further east-west range extending westwards from the north side of the cross-wing. The style is "Cottage ornée."

The south front is two storeys high, with a 2:1 window arrangement. It features a doorway on the right side, with pilastered architrave and a recessed panelled and part-glazed door with margin panes. A bay window has been added or altered to the left. Above these are Gothic-style casement windows of 3 and 2 lights, with Tudor-arched upper sections, patterned leaded glazing, and hood mould lintels. The gable of the projecting wing (rendered) has a similar bay window on the ground floor and a 3-light casement window above. The eaves have overhanging barge boards, and there is a gable chimney on the main range, along with two ridge chimneys on the right-hand wing. The return wall on the right side is also two windows wide and of matching style. A single window of matching style is located on the first floor of the gable of the further wing. The rear of the building was not inspected; neither was the interior.
