Description
The gates, gate piers, and curved flanking walls located approximately 200 metres south of Scale House are from the early 18th century and were moved to their current position around 1860. They are made of ashlar stone and feature wrought-iron gates. The piers stand about 2 metres high and have recessed panels on each face, topped with a cornice and a ball finial. The walls are approximately 1 metre high and extend about 15 metres in length, with a ridged coping. The gates consist of two leaves with bars and dog bars that have scroll motifs. Originally, the gateway was situated about 20 metres in front of the south side of the house. In 1853, the toll road was constructed, changing the route of the Skipton-Cracoe road to the west of the house, which likely led to the establishment of the new entrance around that time or shortly after extensive alterations to the house. The right-hand flanking wall was restored in 1985 due to damage from vehicles.
