Description
This is a small barn or shippon located approximately 30 meters south of Scotchergill Farmhouse, likely built in the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed from slobbered mixed random rubble with quoins and features a graduated stone slate roof topped with wrestler-slates at the ridge. The barn has a rectangular plan, probably consisting of two structural bays, oriented on a north-south axis and facing west.
The west front includes a roughly segmental-headed shippon doorway on the left, made with rubble voussoirs and a board door. There is a square window in the center with a stone slate sill and lintel, and a small square window above that, although the left half of this upper window is blocked. A recent addition to the left end, featuring rubble walls and a corrugated sheet roof, is not considered of special interest. The south gable wall has through-stones on two levels, and the rear wall contains a few very small breathers. The interior has not been inspected.
An important historical note is that the wrestler slates on the roof are an extremely rare survival, likely unique in the areas covered by this list. This barn was previously described as being "west" of the farmhouse in earlier listings.
