Description
The Gatehouse to Kilnsey Old Hall is a 14th-century structure that was altered in 1648 and partly demolished in the 19th century. Originally built as the gatehouse for a former Grange associated with Fountains Abbey, the existing building is the ground floor and southern half of what was once a two-storey gateway featuring a large central arch. It is constructed from limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and has a single-pitched stone slate roof.
The east elevation includes a recessed three-light chamfered mullion window, each light having a round head, which is now blocked. Above this window is a moulded string course with a carved stop at the southern corner and the springing of the entrance arch at the northern corner. The north elevation features a single doorway to the left, which has a chamfered ashlar surround and a triangular head. The west elevation is blank, while the south elevation has a chamfered stone plinth. For further historical context, see Kilnsey Old Hall.
