Description

The Church of St Mary is a church with origins dating back to the 11th or 12th century, which was rebuilt in 1846 by the architects Sharpe and Paley, while retaining features from the 14th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and has a graduated stone slate roof. The building includes quoins and features a 5-bay nave with a south porch, a north aisle, and a bellcot, along with a lower 3-bay chancel that has a north vestry. Designed in a Norman style, the west gabled porch has a round-arched entrance with a hoodmould, and a similar door leads to the chancel. Round-headed lancet windows are present throughout the church. The bellcot on the west gable has twin roll-moulded arches and a gable, while the east window consists of three lights. The vestry's east window is reset and features two triangular-headed lights with a chamfered mullion. All gables have stone copings.

Inside, the two western arches of the north arcade are early Norman, featuring round arches on rectangular piers with plain abaci. The two eastern arches are 14th century, double chamfered and pointed, supported by octagonal piers. The font has a possibly Norman square tapered bowl with a restored stem and a chamfered base. The choir stalls are adorned with linen-fold panelling, and the oak pews were installed in 1957 by Thompson of Kilburn. At the time of its rebuilding, the church was part of the large parish of Burnsall, and the Vicar, the Rev. William Bury, resided at Chapel House in Kilnsey.
