Description
The boundary wall and railings to the Chapel at Sedbergh School, including gateways and a lamp, were likely built around 1897 by the architectural firm Paley & Austin. The structure features a sandstone rubble wall topped with low wrought-iron railings and gates, as well as cast-iron gatepiers and a lamp standard. This boundary wall encloses the east and south sides of the chapel grounds, with gateways located at the north end of the east side and the west end of the south side, where the lamp standard is also attached. The wall is stepped to follow the slope of the land and has flat coping. The railings are simple bar designs, and the octagonal gate piers lead to a double gateway on the east side and a single gateway on the south side, both adorned with ornamental wrought-iron gates. The lamp standard features a barley-sugar twisted shaft and a cruciform top, although it is missing its original lamp-holder; a 20th-century swan-neck electric lamp has been added. This structure forms a group with the Chapel at Sedbergh School.
