Description
The chapel at Sedbergh School is a late 19th-century building, constructed in 1897 by Paley and Austin. It is built of snecked yellow sandstone with sandstone ashlar, and has stone slate roofs. The design is in the Perpendicular style, comprising a nave and chancel under a single roof, with low north and south aisles, full-height north and south transepts (the north transept incorporating a porch), and a fleche at the crossing, alongside a later addition to the west end of the nave.
The exterior features a seven-bay nave with six square-headed two-light windows containing cusped lights and low brattished transoms. A weathered string course runs above the windows, and an ashlar parapet steps up at the ends. A five-light window is set above a single-storey flat-roofed extension at the west end. The low aisles have small, widely-spaced two-light windows with ogee-headed lights. A prominent gabled porch is located at the west end of the north aisle, featuring diagonal buttresses, a parapet with swept ridged coping, a round-headed doorway with a moulded surround, and a statue in a niche topped by a cross that breaks through the parapet. The transepts each have a tall three-light transomed window with Perpendicular tracery; the lower lights of the north transept window are blocked. A two-storey aisle is set in the west angle of the north transept, mirroring the porch doorway and with a cross-window above. A low gabled vestry, continuous with the south transept, incorporates an arched doorway and a two-light window on its eastern side, with a ridge chimney. The chancel includes weathered buttresses, a three-light window on the north side, and a large five-light east window with Perpendicular tracery. A large octagonal fleche, with open arcading and an ogival cap, rises from the crossing.
The interior showcases low aisle arcades with segmental arches and cavetto moulding that fades into the piers. A tall two-bay arcade leads to the north transept in a similar style. The roof is an open timber structure with arch bracing. The chancel features sedilia, a piscina, a carved reredos, and stained glass by Kempe.
The chapel forms a group with associated boundary walls and railings.
