Description
Dent Head Viaduct is a railway viaduct that carries the Settle to Carlisle railway line over Fell End Gill. It was built between 1869 and 1875 for the Midland Railway Company, with Chief Engineer John Crossley and resident engineer J. Underwood overseeing the project. The structure is made from rock-faced sandstone in large blocks, mostly laid in courses, though some sections are snecked. The arches have brick soffits and the viaduct follows a slightly curved line along a north-south axis.
It features ten tall round-headed arches supported by battered rectangular piers, with the central pier being broader than the others and adorned with a broad tapered pilaster. The arches have short cavetto-moulded imposts at their springing, rusticated voussoirs (now reinforced with three tie-plates per arch), a moulded string course, and parapets with rounded coping. The viaduct is a striking feature at the head of Dentdale and provides an interesting contrast to the nearby Pack Saddle Bridge, located approximately 10 meters to the east.
