Description
The barn and bothy range located approximately 2 meters south of Hardy Grange Farmhouse dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed squared grey gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys at the north end and consists of two bays, with quoins at the corners.
On the front, there is a low 17th-century cart arch positioned left of center, which has chamfered quoined jambs and well-cut voussoirs. To the far right, there is a byre door with similar jambs and a chamfered lintel that is arched in a three-centered style. Between these two openings, there is a rectangular window. On the first floor, there is a central board loading door, a 20th-century glazed window for the bothy to the right, and a blocked small loading door to the left, all set within plain stone surrounds.
The rear of the building is built into a hillside, with the lower wall made of squared stone and rubble walling above. The right side features an external stair leading to a central quoined doorway. Inside the bothy, there is a small plain stone fireplace with a lintel that is cut to a three-centered arch. The barn contains a queen strut roof truss. This building is included for its group value.
