Description
Bridge End and Bridge House are a pair of cottages with origins in the late 17th century, significantly altered in the mid-18th century and again in the early 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of rubble stone with stone dressings, and have a slate roof. Originally a single building, they are now two cottages with a former lobby-entry plan.
The garden front is two storeys high with three bays. The entrance to Bridge End is located to the left of centre, within a porch featuring a reset mid-18th century moulded surround, a segmental arched lintel, and a segmental arched leaded roof, now with a 20th-century door. Three early 19th-century ground floor windows have plain surrounds and 20th-century sashes, except for the right-hand window, which was reduced in height to create a 20th-century entrance to Bridge House. The three upper floor windows have mid-18th century moulded surrounds and 20th-century sashes. Shaped eaves modillions are present. A 19th-century gable end and a ridge stack are positioned to the left of centre.
At the rear is a segmental arched stair window with intersecting glazing bars.
The interior features a substantial late 17th-century chimney breast which originally served a central fireplace. A dog-leg staircase has an open string, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail. A wooden panel inscribed in red with a black outline, reading "Cl Al 1697" in a late 17th-century style, is located on an internal upper floor wall.
