Description
This is an early 18th-century farmhouse, later used as a house, with an attached stable or shippon. It was altered in the 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of roughly coursed sandstone rubble with large, irregular quoins and through-stones, except at the front. The roof is of slate and stone slate. It has a single-depth, two-unit plan aligned east to west with a rear wing to the right and a projecting stable wing attached to the west end.
The front elevation has three storeys and two windows, appearing almost symmetrical (excluding the wing). The ground floor features a square-headed doorway with a moulded surround, now protected by a light 20th-century porch with two columns, flanked by tall four-pane sash windows. The first floor has shorter four-pane sash windows, along with the outlines and lintels of earlier windows. The top floor has two small four-pane windows aligned with two of the earlier lintels. Stone gutter brackets are present. Gable chimneys have stone slate bands.
The front wall of the stable wing, to the left, extends the full height under a carried-down roof. It includes a wide doorway with a rectangular lintel, a floating stone slate drip-band above, a similar shorter drip-band at the same level to the right, and a three-tiered pigeon cote near the top with stone slate ledges. The longer west side wall has through-stones and steps leading to a raised doorway, with a one-light window above to the left. The rear wing has an asymmetrical gable and features a doorway flanked by two-light windows on different levels of each floor, all with square-cut surrounds. All windows except the upper-right one have flat-faced mullions; the lower right-hand wall has a corbelled chimney with a cylindrical shaft.
Inside, the farmhouse retains fine 18th-century fielded panelling with dado rails and moulded cornices. Partitions include those to the entrance hall and between upper chambers, the latter incorporating fluted pilasters, built-in cupboards, and drawers, similar to Cage Farmhouse in Dent CP. A dog-legged staircase leads to the attic level, featuring a closed string, square newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The roof has three upper-cruck trusses with sharply elbowed principals to the front slope, pegged collars, and carpenter's marks numbered from west to east. The interior of the stable or shippon retains original wooden boskins. The property forms a group with a privy to the east and Badger Dub Cottage to the south-west.
