Description

Hazelhead Farmhouse, along with its gate piers and garden wall at the front, is a farmhouse built in 1839 for Thomas Tennant. The structure is made of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a central entrance hall and three bays. The garden wall is approximately 80 cm high, curved, and about 15 metres long, interrupted by square piers that are around 2 metres high.

The house has a central six-panel door set in a plain surround with a cornice and a date plaque inscribed "T T 1839". The flanking and first-floor windows are sash windows with architraves and projecting sill bands, and the upper windows retain their original glazing bars. The corners of the building are accentuated with pilaster strips, and it features moulded stone gutter brackets, gable copings, and corniced end stacks. At the rear, there is a large central round-arched stair window, with flanking sash windows similar to those at the front.

Inside, the entrance and stair hall boast moulded ceiling cornices and plaster details. The kitchen, located at the rear left, has a large fireplace, while the dairy or larder at the rear right features large blue granite flagstones and shelves believed to have originated from near Austwick. The building was in the process of restoration at the time of the last survey. The garden wall has a deep plinth, three courses of ashlar, and a ridged coping, while the gate piers are topped with a moulded cornice and square acorn finials. This property is included for its group value.
