Description

Knipe Scar Limekiln is a limekiln, likely built in the early 19th century and restored in 1983. It is constructed from limestone rubble and has a square plan. The structure is terraced into a steep hillside, measuring approximately 5 metres wide and 4 metres high on the north side, which features an extraction arch made of roughly-dressed voussoirs. Lime was in high demand for making mortar or as a fertilizer between 1750 and 1850. This limekiln is located below the quarry where the stone was sourced, and there is clear access from the current road. It is one of the few remaining limekilns from the many hundreds that were built before large-scale lime production began in the Dales in the late 19th century.
