Description

The stoneshaft located approximately 3 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II listed structure, dating from 1667. It is made of millstone grit and stands about 1.3 metres high. The shaft is octagonal and rests on a rectangular base with chamfered corners. The stoneshaft is inscribed on all four sides with the following initials: 1667 RW IK HB RC HK RB WS EH IL. The original sundial and gnomon, which were reputedly dated 1659, were replaced in 1980.
